Summary of "The Only Way to Have A Cow"

" The Only Way to Have a Cow" by Bill McKibben tries to inform humans to decrease the intake of meat eating and how this habit could harm our environment. Cow would release harmful substance like methane when they fart or belch. These actions could actually lead to a bigger problem, global warming. Turning into vegans could make environment more friendly. Eating grass fed cows are more healthy that eating corn fed cows. However another problem forms, grass fed cows are more expensive then corn fed grass which causes people with low incomes couldn't afford to eat healthy.

Reflection about the Course

     My pop culture class is almost at the end of this semester. Look back at this whole semester, I found I gain lot of knowledge about pop culture. At the beginning, I learn the definition of culture. Culture is all around of us. It’s passed from one generation to next generation; it’s shared, expressed, transmitted and adaptive. When people feel unfamiliar way of life due to immigration, it will caused culture shock. During this period, people would adaptive to their new life style. After we learned culture, we turned into learn popular culture. It refers to huge amount of people’ beliefs, behaviors, values, and thought that influence us every day. Pop culture is made up of objects, people, events, place. Iphones, films, clothing, Tyler Perry, Barack Obama, 9/11, Thanksgiving dinner, Holloywood, the White House etc are some example of pop culture. I realized that was my the most interesting Aha moment of the whole course. I began to be interesting in pop culture. From doing project of pop stars, I understood why Justin Bieber is such a star right now. Because he has the criteria of what teenage girls are looking for, good look and talents. Compare to “Justin Bieber”, Jacky Chan that the star of my presentation worked extremely hard for what he want. Though the pop star presentation, I learned many pop stars from my classmates. In unit 3, we studied about movies. Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Espics, Horror, Science Fiction, Westerns are eight main categoris of film, and also there were some sub-genres, such as thrillers. Form learning the movie industry, I understood Tyler Perry’s succeed. Hs was a smart business man. He knew his advantage to catch audients attention. I learned many terms about movie. For example, the center of Hindi film industry is called Bollywood. From leaning the text book –Bollywood Princess, I learned Even how famous the Indian movie star are in Bollywood, they will not easy to break into Hollywood. Stephen King told us several reason why people crave Horror movie. One of divertive reason was watching horror movie gave us an reaction of extreme and remind us how normal we really are. In unit 4, we studied music. I gave a mini presentation of hip pop music genre. Hip pop music is a style of popular music in the US. It included rapping, highly rhythmic, DJing, beat boxing. Also, I learned Blues. Honestly, I could not identify what kind music is blues. There was a amusing experience, we visited the Museum of Broadcast Communications. We learned to reported the news. It gave me a good experience to learned pop culture in Chicago. Thought learning pop culture, I knew more about interesting things in  my life in the US.

The song "Simple love" that I chose to represent my belief in my generation. Love is always simple, a day spent watching the sunset and bike riding is already enough. Love could also be forever innocent without sadness.

Reflection Unit 3

         This unit we leaned one part of pop culture—movie. Many people like watching movie, but I think not many people know about movie. Action, adventure, comedy, drama, espics/historical, horror, science fiction, westerns are eight main categories of film. A category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form or content is call genre. I have learned the western genre, the main character is cowboy, the story setting is in the dry dusty west. it involves action, horse, ropes, boots. I learned 4 movie industry’s website, Hollywood, Paramount, Warner Bros, and Tyler Perry Studios. Tyler Perry is one of famous African American actors. He is very smart business men. He knew his advantage to attract the audience. I leaned many terms about movie. For example a movie can call flick, the center of Hindi film industry is call Bollywood. From leaning the text book –Bollywood Princess, I learned more about Bollywood industry. AishwaryaBachchan one of the most famous India actor lead people know about Bollywood. Even how famous they are in Bollywood, they will not easy to break into Hollywood. Still for a variety of reason, not actor has successfully made the transition from Bollywood to Hollywood. I learned some movie reviews about movie Escape Plan in Rotten Tomatoes website. Stephen King told us several reason why people crave Horror movie. One of divertive reason is watching horror movie gave us an reaction of extreme and remind us how normal we really are. I realized that was my Aha moment of this unit. Also I had fun at our movie poster.

Reflection of Unit 2

Dear Gitte,

    This is the sixth week in your class and I learned more about pop culture. It refers to our beliefs, behaviors, and needs, however, it's not only the good, or the bad and also the high and the lows. Pop culture changes frequently and are not fixed in time. The four components of pop culture are object, people, events, and places. For example, film, clothing, Michelle Obama, 9.11, Hollywood, and the White House. I also learned 3 additional terms, culture icon, fad, and trend. Culture icons could be a symbol, logo, and picture, an object or an idea with great culture significance to he wild culture group. An Icon could also be a pop star, however it must leaves people an everlasting memory. Moon cake, an icon of Chinese traditional Moon Festival that is celebrated on the Lunar Calendar of August 15. Another term would be fad, I never actually know what fad was until the presentation of fad of the decade. Fad is something that is very popular for a short period of time, and I consider that as my "Aha Moment". Although everyone just explained in short words, I learned wild leg jeans were popular in the 1990s, it is the decade's pop culture. Lastly, trend, the general direction of something that will be popular in the future, like fashion trend. A famous trend of the 1600s was William Shakespear. Shakespear's writing had been turned into plays and then into movies. It's even been examined by universities for educational use, which influenced his generation of pop culture. In this unit we had a project about pop stars and my pop star is Jackie Chan. His hard work and dedication to martial arts received upmost respect from others and that's how come he's still getting popular. 

    My Bumper Sticker would be "To be or not to be". This is a famous quote from Hamlet, a play written by the famous trend maker of his era, William Shakespears. This is not also considered a quote but question that we should ask ourselves, should we be who we will be. Many times humans, even pop stars could never be who they want to be but be how the society wants them to be. So we must believe and stay true to ourselves and should be whoever and whatever we wanted to be. 

   I don’t know that what is a better way to learn pop culture.
